This dashboard aggregates data from NHTSA's Standing General Order mandatory crash reporting program — the most comprehensive government dataset on autonomous vehicle incidents in the United States. Every chart and statistic below is derived from official regulatory filings, not news reports or crowdsourced data.
The dashboard is designed to surface patterns that raw data tables cannot reveal: time-of-day distributions, weather correlations, roadway type breakdowns, and year-over-year trends. These patterns help researchers, journalists, and policymakers understand not just how many crashes occur, but when, where, and under what conditions.

📖 Understanding the Metrics
Total Incidents
The total count of unique crashes reported under NHTSA's SGO program. Each incident is deduplicated by Report ID, so updated reports for the same crash are counted only once. This number includes all severity levels from minor fender-benders (ADS) to fatal highway crashes (ADAS).
Fatalities & Injuries
Fatalities and injuries are reported as part of the SGO filing. A fatality means one or more people died in connection with the crash. Injuries include any harm requiring medical attention. The fatality rate (1.0%) and injury rate (49.3%) reflect the proportion of all incidents that resulted in these outcomes.
ADS vs. ADAS Split
ADS vehicles (robotaxis, autonomous shuttles) must report every crash, even minor ones. ADAS vehicles (Tesla Autopilot, GM Super Cruise) only report crashes meeting severity thresholds: fatality, hospitalization, airbag deployment, pedestrian involvement, or vehicle tow-away. This asymmetry means raw counts are not directly comparable between the two categories.
Severity Breakdown
49.7% of incidents resulted in no reported injuries. These are predominantly ADS incidents (which have a lower reporting threshold). The remaining incidents include 49.3% with injuries and 1.0% with fatalities. Severity classification follows our methodology.
