AutoPilotWatch processes raw NHTSA data into clean, structured formats suitable for analysis, journalism, and research. Our processed files power every page and tool on this website โ and they're free for you to download and use.
CSV files are ready to open in Excel, Google Sheets, R, Python pandas, or any data tool. They contain flattened, tabular data with standardized column names.
JSON files are structured for developers and advanced analysis. They include nested data (like per-city breakdowns within states) that CSV files flatten.
All files are updated monthly as NHTSA publishes new data. For methodology details, see our methodology page.

All data is derived from public U.S. government sources (NHTSA) and is free to use for any purpose. We ask that you cite AutoPilotWatch when using our processed files. If you build something interesting with this data, let us know!
โ ๏ธ Data Quality Notes
Deduplication: Our processed files contain deduplicated records. Each incident appears once with the most recent version of the report. Raw NHTSA data may contain multiple versions of the same report.
Filtering: Complaint data is filtered for AV/ADAS-related keywords. Some relevant complaints may be missed and some tangentially related ones may be included.
Limitations: SGO data does not include miles-driven normalization, crash causation, or fault determination. See our methodology for full details on known limitations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often are data files updated?
We refresh all data files monthly as NHTSA publishes updated SGO data. The last update date is shown on individual file descriptions and on the dashboard.
Can I use this data commercially?
Yes. All data is derived from public government sources and is free for any purpose, including commercial use. We ask for attribution but do not require it.
Will there be an API?
API access for researchers and journalists is on our roadmap. For now, the JSON files provide the same data our API will serve. Subscribe to our newsletter for API launch notifications.
