JLR I-PACE Incident

On December [XXX], 2024 at 8:44 PM PT a Waymo Autonomous Vehicle ("Waymo AV") operating in San Francisco, California was in a collision involving a passenger car on [XXX] at [XXX]. The Waymo AV was traveling eastbound on [XXX] when it slowed to a stop to yield to a passenger car to its right that was reversing out of a parking spot situated just before the intersection with [XXX]. While the traffic light remained red, the passenger car completed a multi-point turn until it was stopped facing the red light on eastbound [XXX]. The Waymo AV then began to proceed forward at a low rate of speed but immediately slowed to a stop again as the passenger car began reversing. While the passenger car continued to reverse, the traffic light turned green. Immediately after the passenger car stopped reversing, the traffic light changed to yellow. The Waymo AV was preparing to make a right turn at the intersection, but remained stopped to yield to this passenger car, which was partially in its path. After the traffic light changed to red, and as the Waymo AV remained stopped, another passenger car that was traveling directly behind the Waymo AV entered the oncoming lanes of [XXX] to maneuver around the Waymo AV. As the passenger car was passing the stopped Waymo AV, the passenger side of the passenger car made contact with the rear driver side corner of the Waymo AV. At the time of the impact, the Waymo AV's Level 4 ADS was engaged in autonomous mode. The passenger car sustained damage. Waymo is reporting this crash under Request No. 2 of Standing General Order 2021-01. Waymo may supplement or correct its reporting with additional information as it may become available.
