Peterbilt 579 Epiq Incident

The content of this report is unchanged from the initial report submitted on October [XXX], 2022 (30531-4108-1). On October [XXX], 2022 at 1:35 PM PST a Waymo Autonomous Vehicle ("Waymo AV") Peterbilt Class 8 semi-truck and trailer, operating in Tempe, Arizona was in a collision involving a passenger vehicle on [XXX] near [XXX]. The Waymo AV was traveling in autonomous mode on southbound [XXX] and an SUV was traveling ahead of the Waymo AV in the right adjacent lane. The SUV approached stopped traffic in its lane and struck a passenger vehicle. The Waymo AV test driver then transitioned to manual mode. The passenger vehicle that was struck by the SUV spun 90 degrees counterclockwise and was pushed partially into the Waymo AV's lane, making contact with the right side of the Waymo AV and trailer. At the time of the impact, the Waymo AV's Level 4 ADS was not engaged and a test driver was operating the Waymo AV in manual mode. The Waymo AV, trailer, and passenger vehicle sustained damage. Transdev Alternative Services is reporting this crash under Request no. 1 of Standing General Order 2021-01 because an airbag deployed (in the passenger vehicle) and a vehicle involved was towed away.
