Narrative
The subject vehicle was traveling northbound in lane 2 on a multi-lane highway when traffic ahead and in an adjacent lane began to slow. The vehicle was operating with Level 2 ADAS features engaged.
Approximately 4 seconds prior to the collision, the safety operator disengaged the ADAS and applied manual braking in response to slowing traffic, reducing the vehicle's speed to approximately 18-20 mph. A Mazda MX-5 was traveling directly behind the subject vehicle, with a Lexus SUV traveling behind the Mazda. The Lexus SUV subsequently collided with the rear of the Mazda MX-5. This resulted in a chain-reaction collision in which the Mazda MX-5 was propelled forward and struck the rear of the subject vehicle.
The subject vehicle sustained minor rear-end damage and remained operable. The Mazda MX-5 sustained front and rear damage. The Lexus SUV sustained front-end damage and experienced airbag deployment. Emergency services were contacted following the collision, and law enforcement responded to the scene. No injuries were reported by occupants of the subject vehicle at the time of the incident.
