Narrative

On April 4, 2024, NTSB asked Ford about an incident involving a Mach-E that occurred in Pennsylvania on March [XXX], 2024. Ford was not previously aware of the incident and was subsequently told that there were two fatalities and that the driver of the Mach-E alleged that BlueCruise was engaged at the time of the incident. A police report obtained by Ford on April 11, 2024 states that the accident occurred in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March [XXX], 2024 at 3:20 a.m. in the northbound lanes of [XXX] near mile marker 27.4. The report states that a disabled 2006 Toyota Prius was stopped in the left lane of traffic and that a 2012 Hyundai Elantra had stopped behind the Prius. The report further states that a 2022 Mach-E traveling in the left lane struck the Elantra from behind and that this initial collision pushed the Elantra forward, causing it to strike the Prius. The report states that the driver of the Hyundai and the driver of the Prius (who had exited the vehicle and was classified as a pedestrian) both sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Based on further investigation, the following reflects Ford's understanding of the responsive facts and circumstances regarding this incident. On Sunday, March [XXX], 2024, about 3:20 a.m. eastern standard time, a 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric-powered sport utility vehicle was traveling northbound in the left lane on [XXX] ([XXX]) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Mach-E was equipped with advanced driver assistance systems, including those providing partial automation capabilities that Ford refers to as "BlueCruise". Vehicle-based data obtained post-crash indicates that the vehicle's 23-year-old driver was using BlueCruise as it approached mile marker 26.8. At this location, [XXX] consisted of six traffic lanes, three each in the north- and southbound directions. The opposing lanes were divided by a concrete median barrier and the posted speed limit was 55 mph. some roadway lighting was present in this section of [XXX]. The Mach-E encountered two passenger vehicles that were stopped in the travel lanes of [XXX]. The Mach-E collided with the rear of the stationary 2012 Hyundai Elantra, which was attended by a 20-year-old driver. The Hyundai then collided with the rear of the stopped 2006 Toyota Prius, attended by a 21-year-old driver. At the time of the crash, the Hyundai driver was exiting the vehicle while the Toyota driver was standing near the front of the Hyundai. As a result of the crash, the drivers of both the Hyundai and Toyota were fatally injured. The Mach-E driver sustained minor injuries. At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and road surface was dry. Ford is informed of a pending police investigation regarding the Mach-E driver's potential impairment.
