Narrative
On November [XXX], 2024, Toyota received an initial contact from the vehicle owner stating they struck a deer while driving at highway speed and expected the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy, but they did not. The guest also mentioned their Safety Connect system did not place an emergency (SOS) call and they expected that to occur as well. The owner stated she and a front passenger were in the vehicle, and neither sustained injuries.
On December 18, 2024, Toyota completed review of a field report of the inspection of the subject vehicle, which included EDR and PCS Freeze Frame Data (PCS FFD). The PCS Freeze Frame Data (PCS FFD) indicated that ADAS L2 was engaged in the recorded moments prior to the crash. The PCS FFD recording contains approximately 8 seconds of pre-crash data and images. From the PCS FFD, Toyota observed the following: Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and Lane Trace Assist (LTA) were engaged from the start of the recording until approximately 0.5 seconds before the collision. The L2 system engagement was suspended due to driver brake input approximately 0.5 seconds before the collision. The vehicle was traveling approximately 83mph leading up to the collision. No airbag deployment was commanded.
