Rivian R1S Incident

On February [XXX], 2025, at approximately 12:23 PM ET the subject vehicle was traveling straight with highway assist ("HWA") engaged at a speed of approximately 72 mph in the center lane. According to the front facing video recorded by the Rivian a semi-truck from the right lane traveling at a low speed made a lane change into the center lane, striking the right front of the Rivian in the process. Rivian believes that the lane change of the other driver was the cause of the accident and the HWA system was not a factor. Update: Since we filed the initial SGO report, we have learned that the Rivian fleet driver was distracted immediately prior to the crash event. From the driver's report: "I was driving on the Highway in the center lane of three with ADAS going (hands on steering wheel, Adaptive cruise control set for 2 over the speed limit, foot near but not on pedals), I looked away from the road for 2 or so seconds towards my phone that was in the center console area because my watch vibrated on my wrist that I had a notification, when I glanced back I was just about to impact the rear driver side taillight of the Semi-Truck."
