Rivian R1T Incident

On March [XXX], 2025, at approximately 12:07 AM CT the subject vehicle was traveling with highway assist (HWA) engaged when the driver fell asleep. The vehicle impacted a police vehicle that was on the side of the road (see update). The driver was transported to the hospital and the vehicle was towed. Rivian believes the driver falling asleep was the cause of the accident and the HWA system was not a factor. Update: Rivian is still working with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) and the local DA to gain access to the Rivian vehicle for further investigation and assessment. The condition of either vehicle involved remains unknown and many details are still unavailable. We have learned that the THP vehicle that was impacted was in pursuit, or about to be in pursuit, of a vehicle traveling the wrong way down the highway. It may not have been parked on the side of the road as initially believed. So, the pre-crash movement still remains unknown but there is potential for a very unusual maneuver such as a sudden U-turn on the highway, rapidly reentering the lanes of travel from the shoulder, a vehicle traveling the wrong way at high speed, etc. to have been a factor. The subject Rivian vehicle is an early VIN Gen 1 vehicle equipped with Highway Assist, not the Enhanced Highway Assist recently released to Gen 2 vehicles. The investigation is ongoing.
