Narrative
On April [XXX], 2026, log data shows that the subject vehicle started a trip at approximately 04:40 AM ET and continued driving for 14 hours, with a few brief stops, up until 18:31 PM ET, the time of the collision. Immediately before the collision, the subject vehicle was traveling approximately 71 mph eastbound on the [XXX] Massachusetts with Universal Hands Free (âUHFâ) engaged. The driver actuated the turn signal stalk a half-detent (which activates the turn signal three times and disables UHF steering control) allowing the driver to control the lane change. Here, it appears the driver was attempting a lane change into the right lane. The driver started the attempted lane change with their hands on the steering wheel but before the lane change was complete and the UHF reengagement parameters could be met for the new lane, the driverâs hands came off the steering wheel (18:31:44 PM). With UHF lateral control deactivated, the driver responsible for lateral control, and their hands off the steering wheel, the vehicle proceeded according to road curvature, drifting back toward the left lane and ultimately beyond it. A few seconds after the driverâs hands come off the wheel the driver monitoring system data shows that the driverâs gaze went from looking âon roadâ to âdownâ for a couple seconds and then to âeyes closedâ for approximately 4 seconds. This data indicates the driver fell asleep at the wheel. At 18:51:53 PM ET the vehicle goes off the left side of the roadway, the driverâs hands go back on the steering wheel, and their eyes gaze is âon roadâ, but at this point vehicle contact with the guardrail is imminent. The data indicates that the vehicle responded appropriately to all inputs. The driver failing to maintain control of the vehicle was the cause of the collision.
