Narrative

Monthly update on report [XXX] (reported on Feb [XXX], 2026): Ford obtained the police report relating to this incident. According to the police report, the driver stated that, while utilizing the hands-free driving system, he took his eyes off the road and reached into the rear of the vehicle to retrieve a hat. While the driver was reaching into the rear of the vehicle, it drifted left toward the guardrail. The driver attempted to correct but lost control, crashing into the guardrail. Ford also obtained physical access to the vehicle and was able to extract EDR data from the Restraints Control Module. This data shows: 1) that the vehicle was traveling at a pre-collision speed of 69 mph; 2) that approximately one second prior to impacting the barrier the steering wheel angle registered a leftward input of 40 degrees; and 3) that this leftward steering input occurred rapidly, in less than half a second. This extreme (40 degrees) and rapid (<0.5 second) steering angle change at high vehicle speed (69 mph) far exceeds the steering input capabilities of the BlueCruise system. The police report and the EDR data therefore confirm that the incident was caused by abrupt manual steering wheel input, most likely from inadvertent contact with the steering wheel while the driver was turning and reaching into the rear of the vehicle.
