Narrative

***10-Day Update*** On February 15th, Kia removed the subject 2024MY K5 vehicles ACU and downloaded the EDR data. According to the EDR Report, the driver had SCC set at 85 MPH, which was overridden by the driver applying moderate accelerator pedal directly before impact. The EDR Report recorded steering input by the driver of +30 degrees, then +70 degrees directly before impact, which exceeds the ability of Lane Following Assist. About a half of a second before impact, the stability controls were engaged, which disables SCC. The EDR Report also indicates that the driver was not wearing a seat belt, causing severe loading of the steering wheel, gear shift lever, and other internal components. The driver did not press the brake pedal at any point in the recorded data. Kia did not identify any vehicle or manufacturing concerns during inspection of the vehicle or review of the EDR data. The cause of the incident appears to be driver error.
