Narrative

***July Monthly Update 7/15/2024 On July [XXX], 2024, Kia identified that the incident occurred on [XXX] approximately between [XXX], [XXX], VA [XXX]. On July 9, 2024, Kia received the customers signed consent form to ship the ACU. On July 15, 2024, Kia received the ACU and downloaded the EDR Report. According to the EDR Report, SCC was on and set at 28 mph at the time of the incident. There was no application of the service brakes during the five seconds pre-crash. The only recorded steering inputs were -5 degrees at -4.5 seconds and -4.0 seconds, and 0 degrees for the rest of the pre-crash duration. Kias engineer believes that LFA was not engaged or able to operate based on the conditions present at the time and location of the incident: the travel lane is very wide and there is no right-side lane marking. The street appears to be slightly crowned, which can cause a vehicle to drift to the right if not corrected by the driver and is likely the reason for the +2 degrees of vehicle roll angle recorded in the EDR. The EDR data is inconsistent with the customer's statement that the vehicle veered to the right and the driver could not stop it. No police report is currently available.
